What Are The Types Of Formwork?

Pouring concrete has traditionally been quite a complicated challenge, but the use of formwork in the past couple of centuries has made it significantly easier to put cement to work in buildings and structures. While, historically, that formwork has been little more than some timber planks arranged to hold the concrete in place, today, there is a wide variety of materials in use, and each have different applications. Stick With The Basics
Typically speaking, timber formwork is the most common type of formwork, and will be suitable for the majority of imaginable applications. Timber has been used to help shape concrete for as long as concrete has been used, through the process has only been refined to modern standards within the last few centuries. Using timber for your framework allows you to fabricate your formwork onsite as required, saving you the costs of pre-fabricating molds that you may not be able to use. For a small project, timber is an economical, light-weight formwork solution that should not be overlooked.

The Age Of Steel
Alternatively, steel framework can be used thanks to the strength and durability the material offers. Thanks to the long-term durability of the steel, you can use steel frameworks multiple times with ease, if that suits your project, making them an excellent economical choice for a large-scale project that may require similar formwork to be reused multiple times. Using steel will provide a smoother finish on the surface of your concrete than timber would, and it can be curved and bent in ways that wood cannot, allowing you to make circular structures such as wells, tunnels, and columns.

Steel Lite
If steel is too heavy for your project, then you may wish to use aluminium, instead. Aluminium provides many of the benefits that steel does, including reusability, flexibility, and is even more economical, since it's lighter than steel, but it does have one major drawback: once the shape of the formwork is set, it is set, and no alterations can be made without comprising the entire structure. So long as you know what shape you'd like the formwork to take, you could choose to use aluminium, but you'd need to be entirely certain.
